WHO IS WITH ME?

As humans, we find solace and solidarity in groups and group achievement. This is why people go-out-on-the-town. They want to be surrounded by people of around-the-same-age with around-the-same-interests (i.e. getting their grind on) so they can feel like they are “part of something.”

You know this, I know this. We all know this.

So when you are at your favourite beach-side camp ground around a certain time of year when you can gather all your BFFs in one place and embrace life. This time of year is basically an orgy of mutual interests. As an individual, you don’t really matter, and to some extent your individuality is exchanged for the mind of the hive, the clan. One is carried along by this feeling of solidarity and may find themselves partaking in activities that one would not normally enjoy. For instance, when young men gather in groups they cease to be individuals. A girl walks past and it is all eyes and the acute awareness of physical form. A boy speaks and the group partake in the time-honoured sport of misogyny.

Such happenings serve to strengthen a group. This is, however, only good to a certain extent. If a group cannot acknowledge that it cannot exist as a group forever, the individual experiences a kind of death. Having accepted that it will never function independently of the group again, part of its conscious goes into remission – perhaps never to emerge again.

Groups like this spend their time inventing activities to further strengthen group morale. Sometimes groups will attempt to impress other groups (generally of the opposite sex) by creating monuments to their own bonding:
